Assign Cube User Access Without Being Admin?

Is it possible to set up a "low-level" administrator account in Analysis Services that only allows a user to assign other users to a particular Role?

We have an enterprise app where users in the field will need to call a help desk to gain access to the cube, but we only want the help desk people to be able to perform that one function. We would like to avoid building a custom admin tool that provides the proper restriction. Ideally, the help desk would use SQL Server Management Studio to perform this specific task while prohibiting any other admin abilities. Is this possible?

--
Joe

No, unfortunatelly this is not possible. If you already have tool by which helpdesk can assign users to existing NT groups, then you can include these groups into SSAS roles - and helpdesk personell won't need any access to SSAS.

Assembly access SQL DB don't work in Windows Server 2003

I try to get a custom assembly running with Reporting Services on Windows
Server 2003. The assembly must access a SQL Server database on the same SQL
Server as Reporting Services (localhost)
The assembly is written with VB .NET 2003. I have a assembly running
accessing a oracle db, this assembly works. So I know the security settings
etc. But the problem must be somewhere in detail. Therefore detailed answers
are appreciated.
The assembly works in the designer but not in Report Server on Windows
Server 2003. The assembly get accessed by the report server but obviously the
database connection failed.

or with SP2 from Reporting Services in relation with Windows 2003 Server.

AspNetSessionExpiredException - Your results may vary?

I have a custom reporting application that displays Sql Server Reporting Services reports on an ASP.NET page using Microsoft's report viewer control. The SSRS reports are local reports (they have an rdlc extension).

When a report is left inactive for a lengthy period of time it generates anAspNetSessionExpiredException when the user attempts to move to a new page. The thing that is surprising is that the formatted exception display is contained within the report viewer. The report document map remains visible as does the report toolbar. In the right pane where the report normally appears I see a standard, raw, ASP.NET exception display.

I'm surprised that the report viewer is "catching" the exception and displaying it within the report viewer. Standard events in the page that hosts the report viewer (PreInit, Init, PageLoad) are never invoked.

I have graceful error handling defined in a base page class but it does me no good because the exception never reaches the page code-behind. Puzzling.

Do any of you ASP.NET developers know if it is possible to catch theAspNetSessionExpiredExceptionso that I can handle it in my application code rather than having SSRS display a very ugly, very raw exception message.

I've included the exception message below.

Thanks.

I had the same problem and I found the solution in this posthttp://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=170875&SiteID=1. See Brian Hartman's post regarding sessionState. I used his suggestion of using the out-of-process session state as StateServer mode and it fixed the issue for me. Good luck.

aspnet_wp.exe could not be started.

When I launch the reporting services report server on my sql server, I
recieve the following error:
"Server Application Unavailable
The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is
currently unavailable. Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser
to retry your request.
Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this specific
request failure can be found in the application event log of the web server.
Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur."
In the event log, the details are...
"aspnet_wp.exe could not be started. The error code for the failure is
80004005. This error can be caused when the worker process account has
insufficient rights to read the .NET Framework files. Please ensure that the
.NET Framework is correctly installed and that the ACLs on the installation
directory allow access to the configured account. "
I have validated that ASPNET user account does have the appropriate
permissions.
I have ran "aspnet_regiis -i".
I have validated that ASPNET user account is not locked out.
Are there any other solutions that I can try to get my report server
functioning?Hi Rhonda,
Make sure 'ASP.Net Machine Account' has Full Control permissions to the
following folder:
"C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\Temporary ASP.NET Files"

mentioned below. I also have a folder of
"C:\WINNT\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.0.3705\" from the original installation.
Could there be some conflict with that being there?
If not, are there any other suggestions? Thank you in advance.

SQL Reporting Services. Here are details of the problem:
I've been having a little trouble with an installation of SQL Reporting
Services. The installation is truly vanilla, but I can't seem to find a
resolution for the below noted problem. I have tried all of the fixes I can
find on MSDN and TechNet in the Knowledge Base that address the error
message. If you can help at all, I would greatly appreciate.
From Browser Requesting Reporting Services (http://{hostname}/Reports/ or
http://{hostname}/reportserver):
Server Application Unavailable
The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is
currently unavailable. Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser to
retry your request.
Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this specific
request failure can be found in the application event log of the web server.
Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur.
Event Log Detail:
aspnet_wp.exe could not be started. The error code for the failure is
80070545. This error can be caused when the worker process account has
insufficient rights to read the .NET Framework files. Please ensure that the
.NET Framework is correctly installed and that the ACLs on the installation
directory allow access to the configured account.
Knowledge Base/MSDN/TechNet Attempted Fixes:
317012, 315158, 323292, 833444, 811320
In one situation there were errors in the security log regarding access,
this was resolved on that installation and now works. The only errors
produced in the event log is the one noted above.

local server's Administrators group and it started working again:
NOTE: This completely defeats the purpose of having the ASP.NET account so
we still need to find a solution to why this "just happens".

aspnet_regsql

Where's the sql script to generate "aspnet_regsql" application services database stored? Thanks.

We use ASP.NET SQL Server Registration tool (aspnet_regsql.exe) to create a Microsoft SQL Server database for use by the SQL Server providers in ASP.NET, and I haven't heard the corresponding SQL script. Are you sure there is a SQL script used to created database objects for use by application services?

For more information about the tool, you can refer to:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229862.aspx

|||I read an article saying DBA can use a script provided by MS to generate the application services database on SQL server. Thanks.

ASPNET account permissions

I am new to Reporting Services and still learning, but it is a very nice exciting program. I built a new Report and was experimenting with Grouping in reports and using the parameters. Now I would like to Deploy the report to the Report Server so I can use this report on our intranet, however I get the error that the ASPNET account does not have the proper permissions. I am sure that I need to set up ASPNET to have "write" abilities.

What folder(s) do I need to make sure that ASPNET has this? Or should I be looking elsewhere to set up the ASPNET account on the Report Server?

Thanks for the information.

Will you post the exact error message you are seeing? Does it indicate which resource is not permissioned?|||

This is the exact error message when I try to deploy the report:

Error 1 The permissions granted to user 'BRAD\ASPNET' are insufficient for performing this operation. 0 0

|||The folder that needs permission is the root folder in the report server namespace. But running as the ASPNet account is usually not what you want, since all users will be connecting as the same user account. It looks like your report server config file has impersonation turned off. Is this something you changed intentionally?|||

Brian,

For now I did go into Report Services through the SQL Management Studios, went into properties and did see that ASPNET was unchecked. I checked it and now the reports deploy just fine.

Thanks for the great information.

The problem is that the "Action" column is defined as varchar(20) but it actually needs more space. Change the script to something like 200 and it should work...

Hope this helps!

ASP.Net ReportingServices & CPU Usage

I have a report (stored procedure) that I have set up in SQL 2005
Reporting Services. In a web app, I put a Reportviewer control on the
page, and call the report. After a lot of trial & error, it appears to
work.
Sort of.
What happens is when I open it on that tab (I am using AJAX Tab panels,
which had been working fine without this behavior prior to finally
getting the reportviewer working), and the report displays, the "e" on
Internet explorer at the top of the tab now flickers, like the page is
reloading. It also runs the CPU up to 100% on the computer and although
I can go from tab to tab in it (I am using AJAX tab panels in the page),
it will take like up to a minute to go to the next tab. I'm not doing
anything really data-intensive on those tabs, and they had been
functioning fine prior to putting in the report viewer (i.e. they
weren't flickering & clocking the CPU).
I eventually have to kill the page to do anything, because it has the
system up to 100%.
Any idea why reportviewer might make this act this way?
Thanks for the help,How much data are you churning in RS? The way to tell is look at how much
data is actaully returned from the sproc.
As much as possible, try to filter down your data and do calcs in the sproc,
not in RS. If you return large data sets to RS, you will churn the machine.

I'm calling a stored procedure with 5 parameters, and it returns 1588
rows in Query Analyzer, and runs in 5 seconds there. The only
difference in QA and the Reportviewer is that I am subtotaling & grand
totaling 3 columns.
If I try to run this from within the ReportViewer, when launching that
web page, it will run the CPU up to 100% until I kill it. Pages are
extremely sluggish, and it'll take a minute or two to just go between
tabs on those 3 pages. I'm doing a Gridview on one tab, that returns
about 50 records, and a dropdown box on the second tab that returns
about 25 records, and then this one that I'm doing in the Reportviewer.
If I take out the reportviewer, the other two pages work as they should,
in next to no time at all.
Once I add back the reportviewer, the "e" on the Internet Explorer tab
flickers and I can watch the CPU usage on the computer go to 100% and
stay there until I kill the procedure. I can close it out using the X
on internet explorer, but it takes several minutes for the web browser
to detect that I've killed the window.
This is behavior beyond strange.

changes things. It could be that your total calculations are causing issue.

Manager. This will tell you if it is a report issue or an integration issue
with ReportViewer. My guess is that you are telling reportviewer over and
over again to get the report.

listing, that would return about 100 records, that had some numeric
fields on it, but I didn't do any summing or totalling.
This report performs the same way when I call it from the reportviewer.
If I go to the website, http://mycomputer/reports$sql2005, and run it,
it takes about 5 seconds to display & you don't get the "flickering" of
the "e" on Internet Explorer like you do when I try to run the same
report from within the report viewer.
How am I telling the reportviewer over & over again to get the report?
The fact that I have no totaling in the report tells me that it's not
the returning of the data that is the problem.
The code that calls the report:

you are using the reportviewer control that ships with VS 2005). Somewhere
you have to be responding to an event where you tell the control what report

- I took an AJAX enabled web page, and added the reportviewer to it.
Brought up the report, did the same thing - the "flickering" of the "e"
on Internet explorer, acting like the page is loading.
I figured then that it could be that AJAX itself was causing the problem.
- I went in & created just a regular old ASP.NET page. (HTML follows).
It performed exactly the same way as the others, pegging the CPU at
100% until I killed it.
The report itself was a "nothing" report - returned 100 or so records,
no sums, no totals, no formatting.

On the page (plain old dot net aspx page), what I've found out is that
it will load and act normally, but as soon as the page has been
rendered, it starts the clocking behavior. When you try to move the
scrollbars on the report, etc. it takes a long time to get them to
respond. And when they do, they immediately go back to maxing out the
CPU.
I tried the suggestion of putting a button that sets the report name,
and it didn't make any difference. Code is below.
What happened was that when I ran the page, with the
reportviewer1.visible = false, only the button rendered and the web page
was fine - it wasn't hanging the CPU. I hit the button, and it performs
exactly as I indicated earlier. It displays the report, and it pegs the
CPU at 100% and stays that way until I kill the page.
Here's the code in the codefile:
Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As
System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
If Not Page.IsPostBack Then
Me.ReportViewer1.Visible = False
End If
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath = ""
End Sub
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As
System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
ReportViewer1.Visible = True
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath = "/BA10listing"
End Sub
The code in the aspx part of the page:
<%@. Page Language="VB" AutoEventWireup="false"
CodeFile="Default.aspx.vb" Inherits="_Default" %>
<%@. Register Assembly="Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms, Version=8.0.0.0,
Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"

</rsweb:ReportViewer>

... so you can see there's a lot going on here. The report returns
~100 records or so, no calculations, no summation, no grand totals.
Basically a "nothing" report, just listing product info data. Both the
IIS and the reportserver are on my computer.
In SQL Reporting Services in the web browser, this report displays fine,
no problems. It's only when I call it from the Reportviewer inside a
web page that it hangs.
Any ideas? Anyone?

ASP.NET Problem installing SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services

I am trying to install SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services on a machine with Windows Server 2003. It keeps telling me ASP.NET is not installed or not configured with the web server. I have registered it with IIS using "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_regiis.ex
e -i" and I have installed all necessary updates and restarted the server. I've even set ASP.NET version 1.1.4322 as the default version on the Default Web Site. It is still claiming that it's not installed or not configured.

I checked the help and it says:

Report Manager is an ASP.NET application. If you are installing Report Manager, you must have ASP.NET installed and configured. Setup requires that version 1.1.4322 of ASP.NET be registered with IIS. If you are installing Reporting Services on Windows Server 2003, ASP.NET must be running as Network Service. For information about installing and configuring ASP.NET, see the setup documentation

As far as I can tell, ASP.NET 1.1.4322 is installed and configured and running as the user Network Service. Am I missing anything?

If you have not done actual Asp.net development in this box you are missing a lot because Win2003 comes with IIS not installed and when you install it IIS comes to just render HTML which means all components needed to run Asp.net are disabled. Now to how you fix it first remove IIS if it is installed, then you go to add it in add/remove Windows component add IIS then click on details in that box you will see all the sub components needed to run Asp.net that are disabled. When you have finished that, go into IIS and remove all the security restrictions that makes IIS to run only HTML.

Now to what you need to get SQL Server to install Reporting services 2000 make sure you are running SQL Server 2000 and have at least service pack 3a or 4 and please don't answer questions Windows ask you during the installation only answer questions relevant to you. Post again if you still need help but follow my instructions and you will get through I just helped two people with similar problems.

|||I tried that and didn't quite get there. I uninstalled the .net framework 2.0 as that was the default version on IIS and I don't think anything was using it. I also ran aspnet_ regiis.exe -i -enable.

It would have installed this morning but for the fact that SQL Server needed SP4 installing and everyone got in to work before I could get stuff installed!

ASP.NET 2.0 and SQL Reporting Services

I am running SQL Server 2000 and would like to utilize the SQL Server Reporting services I have heard so much about. How can I do this in Visual Studio 2005? If you install the 2000 Reporting Services it says the Report Designer requires 2003 of VS. I would like to use it in 2005 though. Anyone do this? I can't imagine I am the only one. ;)Yes, I'm having the same need. I'm using the VS 2005 Beta2.|||

You can add RS reports to an existing project; Select "Add New Item" to the project then select "Report" they now have a file ext of RDLC.
btw, it is only available on VS 2005 Developer and up, read more...http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/2005ssrs.mspx

asp.net 2.0 / RS update

Is there a reporting services for asp.net 2.0?
We recently converted our web app to .NET 2.0 and the reportserver runs as a
subweb.
Can the 2 reportserver subwebs run as 2.0 or is there an upgrade available
from Microsoft?
Thanks.RS 2000 is a 1.1 app. You can run both 1.1 and 2.0 on the same web server.
However, if you want everything using the 2.0 framework then upgrade to RS
2005 (requires the SQL Server 2005 license). When upgrading you can leave
the database as 2000 and just upgrade Reporting Services if you want to
(still need the license though). I found noticeable performance improvement
(probably because of being based on the 2.0 framework) when I upgraded.
Definitely snappier.

I'll probably just view reports within my webapp using the VS 2005 tools to
open the .rdl directly instead of using the reportserver/reportmanager
subwebs.
I never liked the subweb approach anyway.

as simple as you might think. Subreports get more complicated, jump to

If you are running Windows 2000 Server, make sure you have the latest SP
installed. If you do have the latest SP installed, you should reapply it
(and reapply any patches since that SP). Once you (re)apply the SP, authz
should be available.
