attach files to new box

sql2k sp3
Is there a way to attach the files of a db to a newly
created box? No backups as these are QA db's not
production.

Assuming that these files are now in use by SQL Server there are several
methods. You can detach the database, copy the *.mdf & *.ldf file to the new
server and reattach the files. Or, use the BACKUP command, then RESTORE on
your target server.
The following reference covers your options fairly well:

Attach DB > 2 GB

I understand that there is a 2GB limit in MSDE so that
databases can't be created or expanded past 2GB. However,
if the database has come from SQL Server 2000 and is over
2GB (15GB)and is for reference only, is it possible to use
within MSDE?
Thanks for your help.
Hi Jake,
I haven't tried it but have heard from others that it will attach. However,
they had a variety of problems later. Wouldn't recommend it except to
perhaps extract some data.

I have created an SQL database and would like to attach an ODBC database so
I can query its data along with data from the SQL database. How can I

wrong and can't be done this way, so how do i do it? Sotred Procedures?
Views? Please help...

Assist needed in creating a replication with sql 2005

I tried to create a local snapshot replication from data A to database
B for sql 2005. I followed the wizard and it was created successfully.
But,nothing written to the replication folder and the job failed.
I manually executed the sqls and it always failed on
sp_addpublication_snapshot and the error was:
'DB4\Administrator' is a member of sysadmin server role and cannot be
granted to or revoked from the proxy. Members of sysadmin server role
are allowed to use any proxy.
I log in to windows 2003 as administrator and the replication account
id dbsnap. What I have to do to avoid the error?
Is there a detailed step-by=step guide to create a snapshot
replication?
Can someone provide a set of sqls that I can just use to create a local
(or remote) snapshot?
Thanks,
Andy

I switched to use administor, instead of a windows user, and the

Assigning Roles to Roles

I have MS SQL Server 2000 DB.
I have created a User and created some tables for the same.
I created a Role named A and granted Select Permissions for few tables to that roles.

When I created another Role named B and added this role (A) to B, the permissions are not being xferred to B. Bcos of which, if i assign an User to Role B, he is not able to select the tables for which permissions have been given thru role A.

Note : If i give assign directly the user to Role A, it is working. But i want to assign User to role A only thru B.I have to test it, but I find it hard to believe...

Why do you want to do this though?

Assigning a Dataset to a Rectangle

Hello,
I've created a Rectangle within a SQL Report, and i'd like to tie it
back to a Dataset. Within the Rectangle Properties it lists Data
Region, but none of my Datasets are appearing in the dropdown.
I found the following article on Microsoft's site -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms159224.aspx - but the
first step is throwing me - "In Layout view, right-click the data
region and then click Properties." Data Region is an option within
the Rectangle Properties and not an object in of itself, so I'm not
sure what "Data Region" it's saying to right-click on.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,

Alex,
First thing to know, a rectangle is not a data region, it is a
graphical "report item" that's more like a container to keep report
items together.
Data regions are table, matrix, chart and list. They can be
associated with a dataset, rectangles cannot.
I'd suggest you try using the list data region as it will give you the
flexibility of freeform layout while still letting you tie back to a
dataset.
Also, take a look at this TechNet article for more info on Data
Regions:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157134.aspx
And this one for report items:

Assign Windows Group Owner to SQL Server Group

A Windows Group has created (FDG\BGU-DATAREADER-HOU), I
used this Windows Group to add to SQL Server databases.
How do I add an owner to this Windows Groups?
Thank You,
DeanHi,
Did you mean a db_owner role in SQL server database. If yes then
Go to Security tab in SQL server and then select properties of that group.
After that select the database access and give db_owner on the selected
database.
Else you can use the below procedure to give db_owner role.
sp_addrolemember 'db_owner','user'

assign configuration package

There is a configuration file which is used to hold a connectionstring for the ssis packages.
Once the configuration file is created then is it necessary to go to each package and then package configuration to point the package to the configuration file?
It seems the packages do not automatically refer to the config file. Instead each time the config file is changed then all the packages have to be pointed to the config file one by one. i.e. going from Dev to live.
Am I right?
Thanks

Once a package points to a config file, you don't have to do anything when migrating to different environments, provided the package can find that file in the new environment.

Assertion failed error while resizing a vector in a plug-in algorithm

I got an Assertion failed error while resizing a vector in a plug-in algorithm.

In order to isolate the problem I created a simple model class in Navigator.h file as shown below:

//========================= begin code =======================

class CStateStats
{
public:
DOUBLE m_dblSum;
DOUBLE m_dblSqrSum;
public:
CStateStats()
{
m_dblSum = 0.0;
m_dblSqrSum = 0.0;
}
};

class CAttStats : public DMHALLOC
{
public:
dmh_vector<CStateStats> vstatestats;
public:
CAttStats() : vstatestats (*this)
{
}
};

//========================= end code =======================

The access to DMHALLOC is provided in that class and in Navigator class as shown below:

//========================= begin code =======================

class ATL_NO_VTABLE NAVIGATOR :

public DMHALLOC,

public CComObjectRootEx<CComMultiThreadModel>,

public CComCoClass<NAVIGATOR, &CLSID_NAVIGATOR>,

public ISupportErrorInfo,

public IDMAlgorithmNavigation

{

public:

NAVIGATOR() : _viAttributeOutput(*this), _vCAttStats(*this)

//========================= end code =======================

I succeded making room for _vCAttStats vector, but when I tried providing room for the vectors of the vector I got an Assertion failed error (file dmhallocator.h Line:56 Expression assert(_dmhalloc._spidmmemoryallocator != NULL)). Please, see the code below, included in NAVIGATOR::GetNodeArrayProperty function:

//========================= begin code =======================

_vCAttStats.resize (2); // <<<<< succeeded here!

// make space for the states

_vCAttStats[0].vstatestats.resize(ulStates); // <<<<<<< assertion failed here!

//========================= end code =======================

I tried using a vector-of-vector approach and I also succeeded.

But I have to use that kind of structure: a vector of class with a vector inside.

I think I must provide a similar approach of vector-of-vector existing in DmhVector.h but I don't know how to do it.

I would apreciate any help.

hello,Claudio

It looks like:

- the original DMHALLOC (containing the allocator pointer), NAVIGATOR is passed properly to the vector of CAttStats, _vCAttStats and used correctly in resizing it

- during resize, STL calls the default constructor for CAttStats , which does not take any argument. Consequently, the CAttStats DMHALLOC instance does not contain an allocator pointer

- _vCAttStats[0].vstatestats.resize(ulStates); attempts to resize the vstatestats vector, which does not have a properly initialized DMHALLOC , hence the assertion that fails

To confirm my hypothesis in your code, try to use _vCAttStats[0].vstatestats.get_allocator() right before calling resize. It is likely NULL or uninitialized (well, not the actual object which is a reference, but the IDMMemoryAllocator pointer it contains).

The simplest and most reliable solution is:

- do not derive CAttStats from DMHALLOC

- use, instead, an IDMMemoryAllocator member inside the CAttStats

- explicitly set that member to the current allocator before using vstatestats

- use IDMMemoryAllocator->Alloc( n*sizeof(CStateStats) ) to get a C-style buffer of state stats which can be freed in the destructor of CAttStats with IDMMemoryAllocator->Free

Hope this helps

|||

Hi Bogdan,

Thanks for you help.

I suceeded using your suggestions.

The drawbacks of this approach are that I have to explicitly initialize vstatestats because the class constructor is not called anymore when I provide room for the buffer and I don't have anymore the vector facilities. Am I correct?

Assembly Clash between June and July CTP in VS.NET/SQL Express

Hi! How do I upgrade the assemblies in a databases between the Framework that came in VS.NET June CTP and VS.NET July CTP. I've created a fairly extensive database in the former which I'd like to use in the later. All of the non-CLR stuff seems to be accessible just fine. Unfortunately I no longer have the June CTP installed and the assemblies are running into versioning problems. I'd be happy to delete the offending assemblies if only I knew how. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

BTW, I tried to install XM and do an export but it also doesn't run with the July CTP. Aaaaaarrrrrgggghhhh....me too!
When I depoly a Sql Server Project in vs2005, It not work:
Common Language Runtime(CLR) v2.0.50215 not installed properly. The CLR is required to use SQL/CLR features.

|||Could you please explain what versioning problems you are facing? A series of steps you took and the related error messages would be helpful.

Thanks,
-Vineet.|||This means your .NET Framework installation didnt occur successfully. Try uninstalling and reinstalling just CLR.

Thanks,

My sql express was installed with the installation of vs2005 beta 2 ( .NetFramework build 50712), I don't know why it requires the build 50215.
Can I switch sql express to 50712 ?

|||

I have a simmiliar problem with sql.

The june CTP of SQL Server wont install with july CTP of VS2005 TS. I found out that they are using different versions of .NET 2.0.

Now what i had a laugh with was the fact that sql express that ships with VS2005 TS july CTP is from SQL June CTP. The visual studio installer automatically installs it just fine, but if you try to install it manually you get an error for an incompatible version of .net framework and vs :S

|||

Yes, the last compatible version of SQL Server and VS for CLR Integration features was June CTP. The next compatible version would be september CTP.
You can use all other features of SQL Express besides CLR integration in VS CTPs in between.

Thanks,
-Vineet.

|||Thanks for your reply! I was hoping it would be sooner but what can you do....

ASPNETDB.mdf - setting your website to use your hosted DB instead

Hi,

I'm running Visual Web Developer 2005 and have created a small site with a log-in function. In VWD this automatically creates the database ASPNETDB.mdf which stores all the user / log-on data.

I have 1 x MS SQL Server 2005 DB which I am using to store data for my site.

Can anyone advise me on how to setup my site / the ASPNetDB so that it runs on my MS SQL Server?

I've searched the ASP.NET forums etc and this does seem to be an area where people are struggling.

I have tried running the ASP.NET SQL Server Registration Tool (Aspnet_regsql.exe) and get the following error:

"Setup failed.

Exception:
An error occurred during the execution of the SQL file 'InstallCommon.sql'. The SQL error number is 8152 and the SqlException message is: String or binary data would be truncated."

As a beginner I've struggled from downloading an online template, then uploading it to my site, and the log-on doesn't work. There didn't seem any instructions / advice on what to do with the ASPNETDB.mdf database.

Help / advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Tom

Hi gilbert,

This website is a great place to start reading about security and asp.nethttp://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/02/24/ASP.NET-2.0-Membership_2C00_-Roles_2C00_-Forms-Authentication_2C00_-and-Security-Resources-.aspx

The things you are probably looking for are Windows or Forms Authentication with SQL Server 2000 (or 2005). When you use the log-in control and don't change any of the settings, for example in web.config, all the default settings will be used. Maybe that's what's causing the error.

This is a link on the page mentioned above, it's about forms auth. and it tells you how to set up that aspnetdb. (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998317.aspx)

Hope this helps!
Wim

|||

theres 8 parts to it.

but the first couple talk about what your asking. in the articles tehre are also links to different other pages which can help you configure your site to use the MSSQL database you have.

ASPNETDB with publish provider

Hi!

I have created a sql script with publish provider and the file has all information about ASPNETDB and now i want to drive the sql script into my databas on my webbhosting.

How do i? i haveSQL Server Management Studio Express to admin my databas.

any?

I doubt you can connect directly to the database server on your webhosting company, but if you can then you should do like this:

Start Management Studio Express. Choose connect to server. Enter the name of the server (or IP) you wish to connect to. Make sure you enter the correct username and password. In this case I believe you should be using SQL authentication with the login you've been given from your hosting company. Once logged in, you start a new query (which will basically give you an empty window). Make sure your database is selected in the combo, and then simply paste your SQL code and press "play" :-)

If you cannot connect directly, through Management Studio Express, they may have web interface (such asSQL Server Web Data Administrator)that you can use to login to the server through the browser. But you must check with the company if they have such a system.

If this option is not available either, then you need to wrap up your code in an ASP.net page and execute it on the server. Let me know if this is what you need, and I can help you getting started with this.

Good luck!

|||

I think it works fine, my tables was created in my databases system tables folder.

But when iam trying to login, i get this messages:

EXECUTE permission denied on object 'aspnet_CheckSchemaVersion', database 'dbname', owner 'dbo'.

DO you iknow anyting of that?

|||

You installed the tables under a database login that "owns" the database i.e. is dbo.

When you log into your application, the connection is using different login/password that is not dbo i.e. has not been permissioned to use the stored procedures within your database. Either use the dbo login to provider your application login with the appropriate permissions (in this case "GRANT EXECUTE on [stored procedure name] to [login name]", or assign your application login with dbo permissions.

If you take the former route of assigning permissions on the actual database objects to your application login - note that the login will probably need execute permissions on all the stored procedures starting with aspnet_ in that database.

|||

So now i have created my table with a correct owner, but when i try to login on my webpage, i get same error.

How can i change the login ASP.NET control to check this table owner.aspnet_Users instead of dbo.aspnet_Users?

Any?

|||

Why do you want the aspnet_ tables under a different owner? They really should be under dbo.

|||

Because i get error messages when i try to login on the webpage, (the error message i write on top).

But if you have another idés so tell me. My userid to the database maybee couldt work with owner dbo.

ASPNETDB migration

I created a website using Visual web developer express edition (including SQL Express). No the user management section of the site (the login/logout database) was created automatically and SQL Server express was installed at my computer under the instance name of SQLExpress. I uploaded it to my web host and he hooked up the ASPNETDB for me. Now the problem is that ASPNETDB has an id password and I was given theMSSQL Server IP. How do I configure my website to accommodate that? Any help will be extremely useful!!!

you need to modify the connection string in web.config

<connectionStrings>
<remove name="LocalSqlServer"/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="server=server ip;database=ASPNETDB;uid=youUsername;pwd=yourpassword"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

</connectionStrings>

|||

WOW! Thats it! Thanks a bunch. One more thing. I am also using the same database to display some data(have added some tables into it manually). What should I put in the connection string to make the connection to the database? Also, can I use a MySQL database instead? If yes, what will be the connection string?

Thanks for your help.

|||

if you don't want to use the same name "LocalSqlServer", then you can add another connection with the same connectionString
like:

<add name="yourConnName" connectionString="server=server ip;database=ASPNETDB;uid=youUsername;pwd=yourpassword"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

I am not sure if you can use MySQL as a configuration Database, but you can use it for application database.

Honestly, I didn't use it before. to get the exact connection string for MySQL, try to add a coonection from the wizard and see how vs2005 creates it in web.config

aspnetdb connection could not establish but database correctly created.

I installed netframework 2.0 Visual Web developer and MSSQL 2005 express edition with SQL Server management express.

I have got this configuration: 2*256 mb ram Intel Pentium 3.2Ghz Windows XP HUN SP2 latest version.

server name: localhost\SQLEXPRESS
Authentication: Windows Authentication

I run aspnet_regsql.exe and the setup wizard created aspnetdb see here, Microsoft sql server management studio can see the database:
MSSQL server management express & aspnetdb

But! When I run to the asp.net web application administration tool in Provider Configuration and choose
AspNetSqlProvider only 1
then I clickSelect a single provider for all site management data link -> then test

The Tool write this:
Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web SiteAdministration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility tocreate and configure the database, and then return to this tool to setthe provider.

Hi,

You application does not "know" where your database is. It is trying to find it in App_Data folder of your application. If it is not there you can specify its locaton by using connection string in web.config like this:

<connectionStrings>
<clear/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
</connectionStrings>

Kiszolgálóhiba t?rtént az alkalmazásban: ?/Website".Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed. 4. A webkiszolgálói fiók folyamatidentitásának helyi felhasználói profillal kell rendelkeznie. A mind a számítógéphez, mind a tartományi fiókokhoz készített helyi felhasználói profil létrehozásáról az információs fájl tartalmaz további tudnivalókat.Forráshiba:Az aktuális webes kérelem végrehajtása nem kezelt kivételt okozott.
