At what throughput should I leave a connection open ?

I am used to writing applications that hit the database "every so often" and am happy with opening and closing the connection to SQL Server for each one.

I am now writing an application that monitors a table where rows are written to it by a 3rd party application at possibly several rows per second. My job is to "pickup" those rows, analyse the data and move them to different tables. This will be done with a timer which is currently set to tick every second.

My question is: At what stage should I start to think about keeping open a permanent connection to the database ?

1 row per second ?

100 rows per second ?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Steve.Can you use a trigger? This way you do not need to poll. Presuming SQL can be used for the analysis.|||Thanks Doug,

It's a good idea, however, the analysis is quite complex and I think it needs to be done within my business object. I'll certainly look into moving as much code as possible into a trigger though.

Your suggestion has given me the idea of using an insert trigger to let the business object know when to run its analysis code rather than using a timer. Why poll and hit the database when there are no rows there ?

Steve.

Assigning Passwords to Connection Managers using Expressions

Hi Experts here,

Sorry if this query had been raised earlier. While In DTS Packages we retrieve connection details for all Connections in a Package from a table and then assign them to the following global Variables

gv_Source_User, gv_Source_Pwd, gv_Source_DataSource, gv_Source_InitialCatalog

Finally we reassign these variables to repective Connection Properties using Dynamic Properties Task. After Migrating to SSIS though we are able to assign almost all variables to Properties of Connection Managers via Expression except the Password which we donot find in the drop down list in order to assign gv_Source_Pwd.

Is there any work around to assign passwords dynamically?

Many Thanks

Subhash Subramanyam

Hi, Was also thinking if we can go about using script task to do the same ..

|||No, you can't use script. You can assemble the complete connection string (with password) in an expression-based variable and then assign that to the ConnectionString property through an expression on the connection manager.

See www.connectionstrings.com if you need help building the string.
|||

Many Thanks to JayH.

I already had this in my mind yesterday with a bit of confusion - How to work out the code which uses Different connection Managers (what if it was Oracle). i.e. the Connection string built will be of different format .

A question for you is: Though the security can be compromised from Value set to ConnectionString, Why Password property hasn't been added in the dropdown list?

e.g. SQL OLEDB Connection, Data Source=Serverxyz;User ID=sa;Initial Catalog=PUBS_CATALOG;Provider=SQLOLEDB;Persist Security Info=True;

For Oracle, First Manually provide all the details, so that ConnectionString will be built on Connection Manager Properties. This seems really a burden that we must manually verify every derived connectionstring if it can successfully connect.

Many Thanks once again

Ramizwell, yes. if you use the same code in VB.NET/WIndows forms it'll run under the security context of the currently logged-in user. i.e. YOU.

under ASP.NET it runs by default as the ASP.NET guest account, MACHINENAME\ASPNET

you need to add ASPNET to the SQL Server permissions list, OR run ASP.NET as a different user, OR specify a SQL Server auth account in your connection string.

this question has been covered over and over in these forums. try the FAQ, if it's not in there I'll be shocked and amazed.

ASP-SQL Server Remote Connection error

Its been almost 2 months i start running a test script page to check if i made the remote connection until now its getting worst.

I did follow every bit of the instruction and pre-evaluation in fact the script is working locally with this string:

cn.Open "Driver={SQL Server};" & _
"Server=global-static-ip;" & _
"Address=local ip,1433;" & _
"Network=DBMSSOCN;" & _
"Database=testdb;" & _
"Uid=xx;" & _
"Pwd=xx;"

i also review the ff post for client and server trouble shooting tips:
http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2006/09/30/SQL-Server-2005-Remote-Connectivity-Issue-TroubleShooting.aspx

surface configuration, sql browser, firewall exemption...

and nothing seems change when i access the uploaded script.

is there anything i am missing?

by the way the script is uploaded by company.

hi,

what kind of exception are you reported with?

ASPNETDB replaces my database in connection

Hi,
I've a little problem. When I connect my local server by this connection string:Data Source=NB126\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=TVRM;Integrated Security=TrueI get content of ASPNETDB.MDF (placed in App_Data directory) instead content of my own database named TVRM. Please help...

Hi ciTrus,

Are you sure your connection string is actually used when connecting to database?(a small trick here is that, assign a wrong server name which doesnot exist to your connection string and test again. see if your data still can be populated).

Rember that there is a default "AspNetSqlMembershipProvider" in you machine.config and if you are using sql express, this provider will direct your membership database to App_Data folder silently (which i think is the case you are currently in). If you want to use a custom membership database, you need to add a new membership provider and put it to your web.config.

like: <system.web>
<membership defaultProvider="SqlProvider" userIsOnlineTimeWindow="20">
<providers>
<remove name="AspNetSqlProvider" />
<add name="SqlProvider"
type="System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider"
connectionStringName=HERE IS YOUR CONNECTION STRING NAME
enablePasswordRetrieval="false"
enablePasswordReset="true"
requiresQuestionAndAnswer="true"
passwordFormat="Hashed"
applicationName="/" />
</providers>
</membership>
</system.web>

Hope my suggestion helps

Bo Chen,
thank you very much. I did exactly what you wrote and it worked.Big Smile

aspnetdb on host, connection string

Hi

I am having trouble connecting to aspnetdb on the shared host. On my local server this is my connection string which works fine:

<addname="MyLocalSqlServer"connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb;User Instance=false"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

But, this doesn't work on the host (just putting in host address):

<addname="MyLocalSqlServer"connectionString="190.40...232,1444;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb_booksale;User Instance=false"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />,

and I get the error :

Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.

so I put in the user id and password that i used when I created the aspnetdb_booksale db

<addname="MyLocalSqlServer"connectionString="Data Source=196...232,1444;Integrated Security=False;User ID=aspnetdbbooksale; password=amanda;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb_booksale;User Instance=false"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

and I get the error:

The ConnectionString property has not been initialized.

Any ideas for me?

Amanda

Hi

My problem is not the connection string, because the one below works when I use the add user wizard. However, I get the error when I use the "createuser.membership" method. Funny tho it worked on my local server...

<addname="MyLocalSqlServer"connectionString="Data Source=196...232,1444;Integrated Security=False;User ID=aspnetdbbooksale; password=amanda;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb_booksale;User Instance=false"

|||

So you mean you got the "The ConnectionString property has not been initialized" when you connect from remote machine using the connection string below?

addname="MyLocalSqlServer"connectionString="Data Source=196...232,1444;Integrated Security=False;User ID=aspnetdbbooksale; password=amanda;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb_booksale;User Instance=false"

Really strange. Every time you got the same error message?

aspnetdb connection string not found

Why I don't have connection string in web.config for aspnetdb.mdf database although the site works?Help plz?

You could have connection string in web.config,and reference it in your code,take gridview for example:

<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSourcel" Runat="server"ProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient"ConnectionString="Server=(local)\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;Database=Northwind;Persist Security Info=True"SelectCommand="SELECT [ProductID], [ProductName], [UnitPrice] FROM[Products]"></asp:SqlDataSource>or "SqlDataSource1" runat="server" DataSourceMode="DataReader" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MyNorthwind%>" SelectCommand="SELECT FirstName, LastName, Title FROM Employees">
In your soucecode you should find ConnectionString .|||The connection string for the database file created in your application is auto generated, you may take a look at this post:http://forums.asp.net/thread/1430985.aspx

aspnetdb connection string

Hello,
I'm getting up to speed with VS2005 and use SQL Server 2005. I'm using the login control in a test web app.

When I run the app I get this error:

Cannot open database "aspnetdb" requested by the login. The login failed.
Login failed for user 'UserID\ASPNET'.

The connection string I'm using is:

data source=localhost;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=aspnetdb;

The AspNetSqlProvider in the web administration tool connects to the database.

My question is, Is this a connection string issue, and user ID issue, a rights issue or is it something else?

Thanks,

Gaikhe

This is a permission issue on SQL, which indicates theUserID\ASPNETlogin dose not have sufficient permission to perform specific task(access in this case) on theaspnetdb database. You should add database mapping for this account to theaspnetdb database: open ManagementStudio->Explore the SQL instance->Security->Logins->view the properties of theUserID\ASPNETlogin->switch toUser Mapping tab-> add proper mapping and permission to the login.

ASPNETDB Connection Problems - Please Please Help!

Hi I am working on my final year project and after over coming one major problem with sql server I have encountered another.

It feels as if I have tried everthing to solve it but cant get my head around it. I really do not have much time left to finish my project and am very worried in case I cant get the app / db fixed in time.

The problem started when I was showing my friend the website over the internet. There was a space in the address / folder name so I decided to create a new folder and copy the contents of the code from the old folder to the new one. This included the app_data directory that holds the databases for my system.

After setting up a virtual directory in IIS v 5.1 i ran the website only to be confronted with not being able to log in.

I have three connections ..... aspnetdb.mdf, x.mdf, y.mdf.

x.mdf and y.mdf are both being read from ok when I run the app but it doesnt seem to be reading from the aspnetdb.mdf database.

I have tried all sorts of things and had all sorts of error messages including:

cant write to database as its read only

cant access database because its already there.

It seems to me that there is more than one aspnetdb.mdf file attached therefore the app is reading from the new one and not the one i want it to.

I will paste the web.config file below. Please note that before i copied and pasted code to a different location this web.config was working fine. Also note that when I hit ctrl+alt+del it shows up 3 sqlservr processes -

sqlServr.exe - Network Service
sqlServr.exe - Rodney (my log on name)
sqlServr.exe - ASPNET

<connectionStrings>

<add name="Classes" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Classes.mdf"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

<add name="Iftams" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Iftams.mdf"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

<remove name="UsersDB" />

<add name="UsersDB" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|ASPNETDB.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"

providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

</connectionStrings>

I have tried reinstalling sqlserver, creating a new website from the vs2005 ide and also creating a virtual directory first and then copying files to it.

I have also tried attaching to management studio, changing user settings etc

I really dont know what to do next. My head is fried. Please help.

I would really appreciate your help on this one.

Regards in hope

Rodney

The ASP.net forum is a better place to ask questions about ASP.net and Visual Web Developer. You can find all the forums at http://forums.asp.net/ and the forum that is specifically about SQL Express in VWD at http://forums.asp.net/54/ShowForum.aspx.

aspnetdb connection could not establish but database correctly created.

I installed netframework 2.0 Visual Web developer and MSSQL 2005 express edition with SQL Server management express.

I have got this configuration: 2*256 mb ram Intel Pentium 3.2Ghz Windows XP HUN SP2 latest version.

server name: localhost\SQLEXPRESS
Authentication: Windows Authentication

I run aspnet_regsql.exe and the setup wizard created aspnetdb see here, Microsoft sql server management studio can see the database:
MSSQL server management express & aspnetdb

But! When I run to the asp.net web application administration tool in Provider Configuration and choose
AspNetSqlProvider only 1
then I clickSelect a single provider for all site management data link -> then test

The Tool write this:
Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web SiteAdministration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility tocreate and configure the database, and then return to this tool to setthe provider.

Hi,

You application does not "know" where your database is. It is trying to find it in App_Data folder of your application. If it is not there you can specify its locaton by using connection string in web.config like this:

<connectionStrings>
<clear/>
<add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
</connectionStrings>

ASPNET permissions error when trying to open an Oracle connectin from a custom assembly.

Hello:
I'm receiving the following error while trying to open an Oracle connection
from a custom assembly; it seems that ASP.NET has insufficient permissions.
OracleConnection oc = null;
// v-- creating connection object, this
is where the exception throws..
oc = new OracleConnection(Def.ConnectString +
";User Id=" + Def.UserName + ";Password=pwdtxt");
I've assigned "FullTrust" to all the CodeGroup entries on my config files,
and I can execute the code in the custom assembly but I can not open a
database connection.
Is there any security setting related with this?
Thanks,
Daniel Bello.

ASP/ODBC/Win2k - TCP Connections

Is it normal to see a new TCP connection for every SQL statement
executed [via ADODB.Recordset.Open] when connection pooling is
switched on?
When my ASP application is running there seems to be 1 constant
connection open, and 3 or 4 separate and continually opening/closing
connections. On examining the packets, it seems that each SQL gets
its own connection to the server.
Thanks
()z
If you are using ODBC this is not uncommon. ODBC determines when it needs
to spawn a new connection and does so. This can occur if a connection has
not finished processing all records and another request is sent. A new
connection has to be spawned to service this request.

ASP.NET/C# Accessing a SQL DB

Good Morning,

I am wondering if anyone can help me/ Currently I have created an ASP.NET webform. Usingt the VS.NET C# IDE I have put a SQL connection and DataAdapter on the webform. I have then created a dataset which should hold the contents of a table on a SQL server db.

However when i run the page which just tries to fill the dataset i get the error below. I am running the page via IIS on WinXP Pro SP1 system and SQL Server is located on a Win2003 Svr.

Can anyone help?

Thanks & Regards,

Alan

Thanks for the reply. I had found that KB on the Knowledge Base and have seen it mentioned in previous postings. Unfortunately it hasnt helped me too much.

Do you have any other suggestions?

The funny thing is I can edit the tables in SQL Server via Visual Studio and the SQL client tools installed on my system. Also if my ASP.NET page runs correctly if it is running via the ASP.NET WebMatrix webserver but produces these errors if its run via IIS.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks & Regards,

Al.|||Are you using impersonation and Windows authentication? Also, what does your connection string look like? Thanks.|||I have set the authenication as 'SQL Server and Windows' in Enterprise Manager of SQL Server and I am trying to connect to the server using Intregrated security. Although I have tried used a specific a username & password to access the database. The connection was generated by Visual Studio as I used the forms designer. The connection string is as follows:

//
// sqlConnection1
//
this.sqlConnection1.ConnectionString = "workstation id=MSDEMOWKS2;packet size=4096;user id=sa;integrated security=SSPI;da" +
"ta source=\"shannon-svr\";persist security info=False;initial catalog=CompetencyMC" +
"T";
|||Try removing the "user id=sa;" part. If you are using integrated security, you should not need that. Then make sure you set authentication in your web.config = "Windows". And make sure you set the identity impersonate tag = true.

Then post what happens.|||Thanks for your help Darrell, After a reboot of the server and client system and a little playing around. At the moment I am no longer getting the error above.

I am getting the following error

"Connect Failed:
SQLState: '28000'
SQL Server Error: 18452
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Driver]Login failed for user null '(null)'. Reason not associated with a trusted SQL Server"

I am setting up, impersonation in ASP.NET using the Knowledge base article: 315159.

Hopefully this willl resolve my problem.|||It should. Once you get to a known error like that, things are usually much easier.

ASP.NET w/ SQL Server Sessions & Cluster Failover

Is there an elegant way to clear out the ADO connection pool used by the SQL
Server State Service following a cluster failover?
We are using a SQL Cluster to store both the ASP Session State database and
our application database.
When the SQL Server cluster is failed-over, any "pointers" to the live
connections stored in the connection pool are made invalid. When the
application tries to reference these "damaged" connections, it throws an
exception, and the pooling mechanism drops the bad connections from the
pool.
In our application, we are using a looping try/catch block to clear out the
bad connections from the pool following a failover, and the users typically
are not affected by the failover as a result of any exceptions in our
application code.
However, we don't have access to the source code for managing the ASPState
connections. It appears as though there is no mechanism for the ASPState
database to clear out the bad connections from the pool following a
failover, and thus the exceptions are affecting users.
Is SQL Server Session State Management even supposed to work with a SQL
Cluster?

Same thing happens to us. We use ASP.Net connection pools very heavily and
they have some issues with bad connections after a failover. We also use a
try/catch to reconnect if there is a bad connection. If you find anything
else, please let me know.

if you want an unsupported method, you can use reflection to call an

asp.net sql connection problem

Hi all,
I have a production environment where I have a 2-node SQL 2005 Cluster
running on boxes which are part of a domain "MyCompany". I have setup a
domain user account called "netasp" and then given it permissions to the
database. I then setup a new App Pool in IIS on my Web Server (not part of
domain, can access SQL server via TCP) with identity setup to a local
account called "netasp" with the same password as the domain user account. I
then setup my website under this App Pool and tried my app. For some reason
it will not connect. This works in a development environment where my web &
sql is on the same box (non cluster environment). How do I go about getting
this to work? For security reasons, my web servers cannot be part of the
domain.

Is your web app and database connection configured for Windows integrated se

probably have a delegation issue.

running it as a local account. The remote SQL Server doesn't know about
your local 'netasp', it only knows about the domain one. I'm not sure you
can 'fool' the SQL server in thinking that the local machine account of the
remote web server is the same thing as the domain account it knows about. I
think you'd have to make your web server part of the domain, and run it
under the domain account. That, or just use username/password for the the
sql server authentication instead of integrated.

First off, if someone gets access to your web server, you could argue that
they will get access to the sql server through windows authentication if
they really try anyway - so it will be the same as if they saw the
username/password in the config file.
As far as storing the username/password in the config file (or elsewhere in
a different file, even outside your virtual directory), you could encrypt
the connection information to provide an extra level of security.

Right - how do you expect to use Windows Auth if both machines are not in a

By using the same login name and password on both machines it should work -
certainly does here where I have an IIS server running sites under local
accounts that match credentials on a SQL server machine and they login fine,
both servers are configured to run in the same workgroup (no domains running
in my DMZ). I am however doing this using ASP and via ODBC and OLE DB
connections, so it could be that something is different in the way ASP.NET
passes credentials around.

ASP.NET mini Form with SQL Server 2000

Hi, i have created a mini form to test out easy steps and my sqlconnection but something is wrong with my connection i think...
I am running windows XP Pro SP 2. i have Microsoft VisStudio .NET 2003fully installed and now im installing SQL Server 2000 DeveloprsEdition. I just cimpleted the installaion and picked some settings:
Local Computer Installation, Create new Instance since this is thefirst time i use it, Server and Client Tools, and chose a Local ratherthe Domain option aferwards. (i have used this version before but hadto format the comp so now reinstalling everything).
My problem is this, i basically started the server and it on online. iwent to the "enterprise manager" and in the "Microsoft SQL Servers-> SQWL Server Group -> (Local)(Windows NT)-> Databases, icreated a new database called tables and added a single table just tobegin testing to see if at least its functional. i was able to do thisso far.
Now i started my .NET, and wrote a tiny program to see if theconnection to the SQL database would open, but it didnt. It alwaysfailed. i am programming an ASP.NET WebApplication. I cant open theconnection to my database. i dont know why. (The tiny piece of code iwrote is at the bottom in case you know c#). There is a note alsounder the code for the ones who will read through its simlicity
any help or walk through would be appreciated. thank u...

<add key="ConnectionString" value="Data Source=127.0.0.1; Initial Catalog=login; User Id=sa; password=pass" />

You don't say what the error message is. Probably because you are catching it and not dealling with it. In your catch block you should output the p.Message to the outputBox for debugging purposes - Writing that to the console is not going to do any good as there isn't a Console.

You said you created a database called "tables". But your connection string is attempting to open a database called "login". If you do not have a database called "login" then the connection will fail.
I've never attempted to set the datasource to "127.0.0.1" before, so I cannot say if that is likely to be a problem. If I am connecting to the SQL Server on the local machine I always use "(local)"
Does this help?

I am not sure why you are using the loopback IP address 127.0.0.1 in your connection string when you can just use local host. In C# check out Programming .NET by Jeff Prosise for good sample code for Asp.net and the book written by the people who write the code for this site Coding strategies of the Asp.net team by Rob Howard and mathew Gibbs, for sample code for web applications in C#. Dim ConnectionAs New SqlConnection(System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("LocalSqlServer").ToString)Dim AttCommandAs New SqlCommand("SELECT System_USER", Connection) Connection.Open()Dim AttendanceReaderAs SqlDataReader = AttCommand.ExecuteReader AttendanceReader.Read() Debug.Print(AttendanceReader.Item(0).ToString)
I get:

MyDomain\pootle.flump

Which is the account I am running on the dev machine. I expected ASP.Net to run as ASPNET irrespective of the currently logged in account. Am I plain wrong? Do I need to change something in IIS? Do I need to change something in ASP.Net?

Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks

VS2005 by default uses a local web server running under your account, rather than a web site running under IIS. This is a change from VS2002/2003.

Thank you

You say this is default - is there a way to change this?

Hi

Does anyone know how to (or if I should be...) run the site (on dev machine) using the ASPNET account?

Thanks

ASP.NET connection to SQL Server

I have a page that runs a stored procedure in SQL server. It works fine when I run the app through Visual Studio but when I build the site and try to run it from the page, it will not work. Any ideas?What's the meaning of "it will not work"? Is it a connection failure? Or incorrect result? Or Command Timeout, ect.?

ASP.NET connection string problems with SQL Server 2000

My aspx page is trying to connect to a remote server with SQL Server 2000 installed on it, the ip of the server is 172.16.3.111 and the same is the instance of SQL Server, sql server is running in SQL Server Authentication mode, user id is "test" and password is "test123", name of database is myDB,the connection string which I am providing is as follows:

data source=172.16.3.111\172.16.3.111;user id=test;password=test123;initial catalog=myDB;"

But I am getting the following exception:

SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

even if I try the following connection string:
"data source=172.16.3.111;user id=test;password=test123;initial catalog=myDB;"

than also I get the same exception

even if provide the following connection strings:

"SERVER=172.16.3.111;UID=test;PWD=test123;DATABASE =myDB;"

"SERVER=172.16.3.111\172.16.3.111;UID=test;PWD=test123;DATABASE =myDB;"

than also I get the same exceptions

Can u please tell whats the problem,is the connection string correct,the DBA has also registered me "test" as a user on the SQL server.One thing which I want to mention is that through enterprise manager I can connect and use sql server without any problems,also please note that in VS.NET when I try connecting using server explorer and test the connection than I connect successfully, than why is problem occuring in connecting throug aspx page.

Try change the param "Server" like this:

\\ server name or server ip \ instance name

ASP.net Connection String

Hi I am new to asp.net and I am having problems connecting to a SQL Server database. My code is;

Dim myConnection As New SqlConnection("server='localhost'; user id='sa'; password='ExamResults'; Database='ExamResults'")
Dim myCommand As New SqlDataAdapter("select * from tblStudents", myConnection)

Dim rstStudents As New DataSet()
myCommand.Fill(rstStudents, "tblStudents")

I'm not too sure if this should be placed in the <script runat="server"> or just after declaring the namespaces.

Also, how do you reference the select statement in the code, currently I have;

<ASP: response.write rstStudents.fields("Surname") Response.write ("test")/
Any help would be greatly appreciatedYou should look at theServer-Side Data Access quickstart for a jump start.
